Elvira Nisman: “Cariocas“
Curated by Julia Obst
Cariocas is Elvira Nisman's first solo exhibition, which first emerged as a pure Idea during her journey to Rio de Janeiro in 2023, but took quickly its own dynamics finishing in a unique collection of memories and people having captured in the streets and her surroundings - accompanied by a poetic surreal aftertaste.
In her visual language, the photographer depicts with a purpose the beautiful unperfection of this incredible city, speaks frankly with the protagonists about their personal meaning of being a carioca and why the feeling of saudade (a nostalgic concept of a love that remains) is the biggest inspiration for the artist.
ABOUT:
Elvira Nisman, born 1989 in Moldova, is a visual storyteller, using photography and words as her preferred artistic medium.
Her motifs are mostly people she meets by chance on her many travels, models of all kinds, or even best friends, who tell their very own story in front of Elvira's lens - often with a poetic, bitter aftertaste. She also loves to create intuitively compositions of daily surroundings, objects by random to transmit feelings in a different non-verbal way.
Elvira's photographs deal with the themes of identity, unconventional beauty, unspoken interpersonal relationships, emotions and non-emotions, and she likes to challenge the uncomfortable and transforms them into a very special beauty of her own through photography and writing.
She works as a freelance artist in projects with a social background, as well as for commercial clients in the field of advertising photography and social media. She works and lives in Berlin, but always on tour worldwide.
